We know—that’s a big claim. Yet that’s precisely why we designed MyJobAngel from scratch: because we wanted to offer a dramatically better alternative. We started with the jobseeker, looking at the challenges they faced and identifying key areas where better design could make a big difference. In order to accomplish this, we approached the problem from many different angles.
Job Search Profiles
One of the first challenges we found was having to reenter your job search parameters every time you look for jobs. This gets worse if you’re looking for several positions with slightly different parameters. For example, a communication professional looking for a few different titles like editor, content creator, or copywriter. To address this, the app allows you to create as many job search profiles as needed.* You can run them anytime, or as we suggest, just twice a week.
Improved Accuracy
Our next discovery was that the search results were typically not very accurate. Often showing a large number of poor matches, you’d be forced to go through them one by one just to find the good matches. To fix this, we created smart matching algorithms which evaluate every result we get and only show you the best matches.
Job Memory
We also noticed that jobseekers were seeing see the same jobs over and over again each time they searched. To save time, we taught the app to “remember” the jobs that the jobseeker already seen. This is how it works: of all the jobs that you see, you’ll save some, and discard the others. We track all of that so that the next time you search, you only see new jobs.
Help With Job Tracking
The next concern that came up was keeping track of job applications. Every job seeker develops their own method, but basically there are some universal things that we all want to remember. Things like: the name of the company, the title of the position, the URL of the job posting, the date applied, and possibly some notes about the job. Some people use spreadsheets to track this, others use a Word document, but we were told that eventually most people just stop doing it because it’s so much extra work. While this is time-consuming for a human to do, it’s super easy for an app to track, especially since that information is already stored. With MyJobAngel tracking the jobs you’ve applied to is very easy and it only takes seconds. You can change the status of each job from “Saved, to “Applied To”, to “Interviewing”, and so on. Additionally, you can write notes on each job and update them as frequently as you want.
Advanced Filters
Another key timesaving feature of MyJobAngel is our advanced filtering system. Some of the features that we built into the app were not actually requested by our user group, but are the result of our over 15 years developing apps. One example is the use of filters. Eventually, we know our users will have saved many, many jobs, which presents the next challenge: how to find the information that you need. For example, you may need to find a job that you applied to and you only remember a partial name of the company, or you may want to review all the jobs that you have applied to in order to do a follow-up. Scrolling through tons of entries is impractical, but with a well-designed filter you can get the answer to these questions in a couple of seconds.
Share the Job Info
Although our app was primarily designed to help you find and apply to jobs directly from your phone, we recognize that in some situations you may want to share the job information. Some people may want to complete the job application from their computer, or share it with a friend. To help with this, the app allows you to share information on a particular job by sending the link to it via: email, text etc.
Failing Gracefully
We know that mistakes are possible, so we make it easy to recover from them. We let you review all the jobs that you saved and all the jobs that you discarded. It is very easy to switch back and forth if you change your mind. That is: You can Discard a saved job or Save a discarded job at any time.
That’s it! I hope the information in this article helps you to better understand our motivation in designing the app the way we did. We recommend that you run job searches only twice a week using the method described in our tutorials.
*Some features are only available in the Premium version.
